KEY TAKEAWAY

Lenormand cards are a 19th-century French oracle system built around simple, friendly imagery rather than deep symbolism. The classic "Petit Lenormand" deck has 36 cards, is read through combinations rather than upright/reversed positions, and gives very concrete, situation-specific messages — a refreshing contrast to tarot's more abstract, symbolic readings.

Introduction

NyantaNyanta
What's actually different between Lenormand cards and tarot cards?
NekosukeNekosuke
It comes down to the number of cards and how you read them. Lenormand uses 36 cards, and the real magic happens when you combine cards together to build meaning.

Each Lenormand card features a simple, friendly picture that's easy to relate to. Because the system has a relatively short history, the messages the cards convey tend to be refreshingly clear and direct.

There are actually two sizes of Lenormand deck: the full 54-card Lenormand and the more popular, easier-to-handle 36-card deck known as the "Petit Lenormand." This article focuses on the Petit Lenormand, so please keep that in mind as you read on.

Every reference to "Lenormand cards" below refers specifically to the Petit Lenormand deck.

The History of Lenormand Cards

The Lenormand deck takes its name from Marie Anne Adelaide Lenormand, a celebrated fortune teller in 19th-century France.

Its origins trace back to a card game invented in 18th-century Germany called "The Game of Hope," which is said to have resembled a board game similar to a modern game of life.

An advertisement for the 36-card deck based on the Game of Hope — the deck that would come to be known as the "Petit Lenormand" — first appeared in 1846.

Many modern Lenormand decks still feature playing-card suits and ranks alongside the main imagery, a holdover from the fact that the original Game of Hope cards doubled as an ordinary deck of playing cards of the era.

The Meaning of Each Lenormand Card

Here is a rundown of the meaning of each card, one by one.

Lenormand readings put great value on the inspiration you personally draw from each card's picture. Use the keywords below as a starting point and let your own impressions expand from there.

A sample "one-card oracle" message is included for each card as well — but again, trust the message that resonates with you personally.

1. The Rider

Keywords: good news, opportunity, message, encounter, a fresh start, a vehicle

Important news that brings you an opportunity may be on its way. If something clicks for you, don't hesitate — act on it.

One-card oracle: Happy news looks likely to arrive. Try to respond quickly when it does.

2. The Clover

Keywords: small happiness, modest joys, good luck, plants

The four-leaf clover represents the small, everyday pleasures of daily life.

One-card oracle: Something pleasant or lucky seems to be heading your way.

3. The Ship

Keywords: travel, departure, going abroad, a challenge, the next stage, possibility

A new stage on your path forward is drawing near. It may bring new encounters or a shift in your position or circumstances.

One-card oracle: A new development seems likely. An encounter with a different culture may bring you good fortune.

4. The House

Keywords: home, household, family, hometown, roots, security, stability, contentment

This card represents a place where you can relax and feel at ease — it doesn't have to literally mean your house or hometown. Overall, it carries a solid, stable image.

One-card oracle: Take some time to relax at home.

5. The Tree

Keywords: health, longevity, vitality, growth, accumulation, future potential

This card evokes the vigorous life force of green growth, and the idea of accomplishing something over a long stretch of time.

One-card oracle: Refresh yourself somewhere surrounded by greenery.

6. The Clouds

Keywords: anxiety, confusion, worry, gloom, an unclear path ahead

A curtain of clouds is descending over the road ahead, and it's making things hard to see — anxious feelings may intensify. This card calls for composure, and for stepping back to view things from a bit of distance.

Whatever card sits next to the Clouds will remain unresolved until the clouds clear. A card next to a particularly dark cloud suggests that matter will need careful, patient handling.

One-card oracle: Proceed carefully and deliberately.

7. The Snake

Keywords: a woman, temptation, ill will, jealousy, a rival, healing

This card can simply represent a woman (a friend or mother figure), or it can represent malice.

It can also represent a person harboring ill intent — not necessarily a woman. When it does represent a woman, don't assume she has bad intentions just because of this card.

In a love reading, the Snake can also represent a female rival.

One-card oracle: Your charm is on the rise — watch out for jealousy or envy from those around you.

8. The Coffin

Keywords: an ending, a reset, completion, cancellation, rest

This card suggests that various matters or relationships are coming to a close. Although the coffin evokes death, it doesn't necessarily mean someone will die.

When the Coffin appears, it's usually a sign that you're being asked to let go of rigid attachments and take a more flexible, accepting approach.

One-card oracle: Prepare for a cancellation or change of schedule — or simply take some time off.

9. The Bouquet

Keywords: celebration, joy, gratitude, a gift, a present

This card suggests a happy event is coming, something like receiving a bouquet of flowers. Joy and happiness are on their way.

It can also simply represent a gift or present itself.

One-card oracle: Express your gratitude to someone.

10. The Scythe

Keywords: a decision, something sudden, an interruption, danger, an accident, breakage

Since a scythe is used for harvesting, this card represents letting go of something you currently have in order to gain something new.

One-card oracle: A moment of decision is approaching. You may lose something, but try to see letting go in a positive light — it's necessary.

11. The Whip

Keywords: trouble, an accident, confusion, discord, an argument, a quarrel, conflict

Many versions of this card show both a whip and a broom: the whip represents harsh words directed at someone, while the broom represents purification through speaking those words out loud.

If there's something you want to say, this card suggests things will go more smoothly if you say it clearly.

It can also represent disciplining yourself rigorously toward a goal, suggesting you're being called to tackle something with strong determination.

One-card oracle: Don't hold back — say what's on your mind.

12. The Birds

Keywords: communication, chatter, sharing information, an omen, social media

This card evokes conversation and communication, inspired by the chirping of birds.

Since gossip can spread in an instant, this card can also represent something going viral on social media.

Birds are also traditionally seen as messengers from the heavens, so an important message may be hidden within an otherwise casual conversation.

One-card oracle: Today looks like a fun day for chatting.

13. The Child

Keywords: a child, something new, a newcomer, a beginner, a beginning, innocence, curiosity

This card can represent an actual child or grandchild, a newcomer, or it can represent a childlike sense of curiosity and interest in something new.

One-card oracle: Go looking for something that excites you.

14. The Fox

Keywords: cleverness, putting on an act, performance, a rival, deception, competence, a wise strategist

In modern readings, the Fox tends to evoke someone who's a smooth talker or good at getting things done efficiently.

In career readings, this often points to sales work, sales talk, or a highly capable colleague. It can also represent a rival of the querent.

One-card oracle: Proceed with caution.

15. The Bear

Keywords: power, strength, someone in a position of authority, stubbornness, a boss, a father figure, a mother figure

Since the bear is often called the king of beasts, this card has long symbolized power and authority. It often represents an influential figure such as a parent or a boss.

In readings, the Bear can also be used to represent a second male figure.

One-card oracle: Act with confidence.

16. The Star

Keywords: hope, a wish, an ideal, longing, a dream, a star (celebrity), spirituality

The Star card is a sign of hope stretching out into the future.

One-card oracle: Trust your intuition and flashes of insight.

17. The Stork

Keywords: change, moving house, relocation, a transfer, pregnancy, childbirth

The Stork brings something new — new information. It signals a coming change at work, within the family, or in your living situation.

Because storks are migratory birds that return to the same place each year, this card can also point to trustworthy, enduring relationships such as family or friendship.

One-card oracle: Try switching out your wardrobe for the season or redecorating your room.

18. The Dog

Keywords: a friend, friendship, companions, a close friend, support, an ally, trust

This card is a sign that you can trust in the friendship and support of the people around you.

One-card oracle: If something's troubling you, try talking to someone about it.

19. The Tower

Keywords: authority, the state, public institutions, government, public affairs, solitude, conservatism, a building

The Tower represents official, public institutions — think city hall, the tax office, schools, kindergartens, or daycare centers.

Because a tower is also a closed-off place where no one can disturb you, this card can suggest solitude or an inability to rely on others.

It can also suggest looking at a situation from a high vantage point, the way you would from atop a tower.

One-card oracle: Be mindful of etiquette and common sense in how you carry yourself.

20. The Garden

Keywords: a party, an event, a circle of people, relationships, networking

The Garden card evokes places where encounters can blossom into romance, or where you might build professional connections and networks.

One-card oracle: A good encounter may be in store. Try heading somewhere where people gather.

21. The Mountain

Keywords: difficulty, a trial, a challenge, an obstacle, a hurdle

This card evokes a tall mountain standing in your way. There's likely a challenge you need to overcome.

One-card oracle: Set your sights on a high ideal.

22. The Path

Keywords: a choice, resolve, a turning point, a fork in the road, indecision

A moment of choice and decision is drawing near. If you're torn, go back to basics and think about what you truly want and how you want to proceed.

One-card oracle: That choice isn't wrong. Move forward with confidence.

23. The Mice

Keywords: loss, misplacement, stress, bad rumors, laziness, overindulgence

This card evokes something precious being nibbled away by mice. There may be an unfavorable trend developing — around money, affection, professional trust, or achievements — that you haven't noticed yet. Address it sooner rather than later.

One-card oracle: Watch out for lost or misplaced items.

24. The Heart

Keywords: love, affection, excitement, joy, happiness, fulfillment

The Heart card represents love in a broad sense — not just romance, but also friendship, family bonds, and relationships of trust.

Beyond relationships with others, it can also represent your own sense of inner fulfillment and contentment.

One-card oracle: Do what you love. Choose the option you're drawn to.

25. The Ring

Keywords: marriage, engagement, a contract, a promise

The Ring evokes marriage or engagement, representing happy, joyful news.

Business contracts and agreements are also likely to proceed smoothly.

One-card oracle: Be mindful of acting in ways that build others' trust in you.

26. The Book

Keywords: a book, learning, knowledge, academics, a secret, something hidden

Symbolizing knowledge, the Book can represent scholarship and study, as well as a secret hidden within.

Some versions of the card show a closed book, others an open one: a closed book emphasizes secrets or things being kept hidden, while an open book suggests opening up and sharing what's on your mind.

One-card oracle: Pay a visit to a library or bookstore.

27. The Letter

Keywords: mail, a message, email, texts/chat apps, information, a record

In the modern day, the Letter card often represents exchanging messages online. Any form of written communication fits this card.

One-card oracle: There seems to be something you need to reach out about.

28. The Gentleman

Keywords: a man, a romantic partner, a male friend or acquaintance, a man you're interested in, a man close to you

If the querent is male, the Gentleman represents the querent themselves. If the querent is female, this card represents a partner, romantic interest, or a man in their life.

One-card oracle: If you're struggling with something, try talking to a man close to you.

29. The Lady

Keywords: a woman, a romantic partner, a female friend or acquaintance, a woman you're interested in, a woman close to you

If the querent is female, the Lady represents the querent herself. If the querent is male, this card represents a partner, romantic interest, or a woman in their life.

One-card oracle: If you're struggling with something, try talking to a woman close to you.

30. The Lily

Keywords: sexuality, purity, family, lineage, refinement, pride

When the Lily card carries a sexual undertone, it can either represent trust within a partnership or family, or a more sexual, romantic implication.

In career readings, it tends to suggest improving your skills or new business opportunities.

One-card oracle: You may feel a deepening of love.

31. The Sun

Keywords: success, happiness, good fortune, honor, energy

The Sun card signals growth and joyful circumstances across the board.

One-card oracle: Things will likely go the way you want.

32. The Moon

Keywords: emotion, imagination, sensitivity, intuition, creativity, popularity, taste

The Moon card represents intangible, ever-shifting things — much like a person's feelings. It suggests this is a time to trust your intuition over logic.

It can also point to receiving recognition or high evaluation at work, though it also warns against caring too much about others' opinions.

One-card oracle: Immersing yourself in music or art will soothe your heart.

33. The Key

Keywords: a key, the key to good fortune, opportunity, a solution, peace of mind, safety, a critical point

The Key card can either open a door to the future or lock a door to protect what's inside.

If it's a key that opens a door, it points to a solution and hints leading toward the future.

It can also represent locking away and protecting something precious, such as money or love.

One-card oracle: Try challenging yourself with something new.

34. The Fish

Keywords: money, abundance, assets, wealth, good fortune, the sea, waterside places

The Fish symbolizes abundance and wealth. When this card appears, it can be a sign of financial gain to come.

It can also represent other kinds of abundance, such as joy in relationships or material blessings.

One-card oracle: You may be able to look forward to unexpected income or a great purchase.

35. The Anchor

Keywords: work, connection, security, stability, a goal, a bond

The Anchor represents your connection to society, so in modern readings it's most often interpreted in terms of work.

It can also represent connections with the people around you — family, a partner, a lover, a toxic relationship, a lingering bond, or the community you belong to — pointing to whatever it is that's holding you in place.

One-card oracle: Work may take priority for you right now.

36. The Cross

Keywords: responsibility, a burden, destiny, fate, a mission, duty, religion

The Cross card represents the weight of responsibility you carry, and the deeper meaning found within it.

One-card oracle: Something fateful may be about to happen.

How Lenormand Cards Differ from Tarot Cards

Many people picture Lenormand cards as basically "another version" of tarot cards.

But if you already practice tarot reading, it's best to think of Lenormand as an entirely separate system.

First, in tarot each card carries its own symbolic meaning, whereas with Lenormand cards you can interpret the picture on the card fairly literally, at face value.

Because of this, tarot readings tend to come out more abstract, while Lenormand readings tend to give more concrete results — though you'll still need to flesh out each card's meaning to fit the situation at hand.

Tarot also has a tradition of reading reversed cards, but Lenormand does not use reversed positions at all.

Instead, Lenormand is known for what's called "combination reading," where placing certain cards next to each other reveals a specific meaning. For example, House + Child can suggest a new home or buying a house; Ring + Star can suggest a wish for marriage; Book + Ship can suggest a guidebook — and so on, with many possible readings.

Note that the Tower, Sun, Moon, and Star all appear in both tarot and Lenormand decks, but their meanings differ between the two systems, so be careful not to mix them up.

A Lenormand Reading Method: The One-Card Oracle

Let's walk through a one-card oracle reading using Lenormand cards.

A "one-card oracle" is a reading where you draw just a single card to receive a message.

This method suits questions like "What does today have in store for me?" or "What advice do I need today?"

Before You Begin

Before starting your reading, decide what you want to ask about, then shuffle and cut the deck.

To shuffle, mix the cards thoroughly — either holding them in one hand like a deck of playing cards and repeatedly moving several cards from the bottom to the top, or mixing them around on a table.

To cut, take the shuffled deck and split it into three piles, then reassemble them in a different order than before.

Doing the One-Card Reading

For a one-card oracle reading, spread the shuffled and cut cards out in a fan shape, choose one card, and receive its message.

Read the card's meaning and its one-card-oracle message from above, and interpret it in your own way.

At first you might not be sure what it means, but as you get used to it, images and associations will start to come more naturally. Try drawing a card at the end of the day and reflecting back on what happened that day — you may find it clicks into place.

In Summary

We've covered the history of Lenormand cards, the meaning of each card, and how the system differs from tarot — how did you find it?

Lenormand's imagery is easy to grasp, and most of it still feels relevant today. Its greatest strength is probably how approachable it is, making it easy to freely expand each card's meaning to fit your situation.

We hope this article has helped you enjoy discovering Lenormand cards.
