KEY TAKEAWAY

An ordinary deck of playing cards can become a fortune-telling tool the moment you learn a simple system: numbers Ace through 10 follow a story of beginnings-to-endings, the face cards J, Q, K represent stages of a person's character, and the four suits each carry their own theme (Hearts = love, Diamonds = money, Clubs = luck, Spades = challenges). From there you can try easy spreads such as One Oracle, Two/Three Oracle, the Clock method, the romance-focused Monte Carlo spread, and even Lenormand-style readings using a regular deck.

Introduction

Have you touched a deck of playing cards recently?

You don't even need tarot cards — a single deck of playing cards is all it takes to get started right away!

Many people probably remember enjoying card games with a deck of playing cards as a child, even if that same deck has been sitting untouched in the back of a drawer ever since they grew up.

Playing cards usually bring to mind games and entertainment, but they're actually well known as a tool for fortune telling too.

Because the cards themselves have such a playful, casual feel, you can try this kind of fortune telling in a relaxed way — and it tends to give clear, straightforward answers. That's the real charm of playing-card fortune telling.

We'll take a detailed look at how to get started with this style of card reading.

What Each Card Means

When you're getting started with playing-card fortune telling, the first thing you'll probably want to know is what each card means.

Let's start there.

If you have a deck on hand, take a look at it now.

There are four suits, and within each suit you'll find cards numbered 1 through 10, along with cards for J, Q, and K.

Most decks also include one or two Jokers.

That means a full deck adds up to somewhere between 52 and 54 cards in total.

You might think, "There's no way I can memorize the meaning of more than 50 cards" — but don't worry.

The cards from 1 through 10, plus J, Q, and K, in each suit follow a kind of story arc. Once you get a rough sense of that flow, all you need to do is combine it with the meaning of each of the four suits.

Add in the meaning of the Joker, and you'll be able to interpret every single card in the deck.

Let's walk through the meaning behind each number and letter, and trace the story that runs through the whole sequence.

The Flow of the Numbers

Tracing the flow of the numbers gives you something like this:

  • 1 (Ace) — the beginning of something.
  • 2 — balance formed by the union of two elements.
  • 3 — a triangular balance made of three elements: when, where, and what.
  • 4 — stability. A fourth element joins the previous three, forming a calm, square-like state.
  • 5 — the stage of finally moving toward completion.
  • 6 — the stage where things actually start moving, carrying the image of forming a three-dimensional shape.
  • 7 — the stage of steadying your footing again and starting over.
  • 8 — the stage of exerting powerful strength.
  • 9 — the stage of aiming for final completion.
  • 10 — the end of something.

By grasping the image behind each number and moving from 1 (Ace) through to 10, a clear story emerges: one of steadily, carefully moving forward step by step to accomplish something.

The Flow of the Letters

Now let's look at the letters:

  • J — a lively young person
  • Q — a graceful, elegant presence
  • K — a composed, settled figure

Together, these represent the process by which a single person's character is formed.

Once you've grasped this life-like story arc and the outline of character formation, take a look at what each of the four suits means:

  • Hearts — love and creativity
  • Diamonds — wealth and business
  • Clubs — good fortune and growth
  • Spades — trials and challenges

Combine what each suit symbolizes with the meaning of its number or letter, then let your imagination run freely with the interpretation — and anyone can enjoy playing-card fortune telling with ease.

As for the Joker, just remember this: whether for better or worse, it represents something that overturns and resets the situation.

How to Do Playing-Card Fortune Telling

Now let's take a closer look, one step at a time, at the different ways you can practice playing-card fortune telling.

Preparation

Before you begin a reading, preparation is essential.

Choose a quiet place, calm your mind, and set up an environment where you can focus fully on the reading.

Next, decide on the theme — what you want to know about.

Holding that theme in your mind, shuffle the cards thoroughly (mixing them clockwise, for example), optionally split the deck into three piles, and then bring them back together into a single pile.

One Oracle

Once preparation is done, the first thing to try is One Oracle.

Keep your question clearly in mind, and, following your intuition, pick the one card that catches your attention.

You're free to choose any theme you like, but for beginners we recommend something simple like "my fortune for today."

Slowly recall the meaning of the card you drew, relax, and compare that meaning against whatever has been on your mind lately.

As you do this, some kind of relevant sign or insight will likely surface in your mind.

Let your imagination expand freely from there, and you'll be able to catch the message the card is trying to convey.

That message is, without a doubt, the answer you've been looking for.

Once you've tried One Oracle a few times and built up experience reading on different themes, gradually increase the number of cards you draw, and freely assign a meaning to each position as you interpret them.

Two Oracle and Three Oracle

For example, with a two-card draw (Two Oracle), if you're reading your fortune for the day, you might let the first card represent "morning" and the second represent "afternoon."

Or, if you have a small worry on your mind, you could set the first card as "the present" and the second as "the future," to get a sense of where things stand now before looking ahead.

Taking it a step further with a three-card draw (Three Oracle), assign the first card to "the past," the second to "the present," and the third to "the future" — this tends to produce results that are easy to understand, so it's a method we recommend.

An Easy Way to Enjoy Playing-Card Fortune Telling

Among the many methods of playing-card fortune telling, some are especially simple and fun to try.

One method we particularly recommend for beginners, because it's so easy to pick up, is called "the Clock."

It's a method for reading your fortune for the day. Here's how it works:

  • Shuffle all 52 cards well, excluding the Jokers.
  • Lay the cards face-down on the table in the shape of a clock face, placing one card at each position from 1 o'clock through 12 o'clock, plus one card in the very center. (Repeat this four times around until every card has been placed.)
  • Turn over the top card from the center pile. Match its number to the corresponding position on the clock face, and tuck the card face-up underneath the pile at that position.
  • Turn over the top card of the pile you just placed the card under, and repeat the same process.

Keep repeating this — it feels like the clock face is lighting up bit by bit — until either all four Kings have gathered in the center pile, or four cards of the same position have all been turned face-up elsewhere.

If the four Kings gather in the center before any other position completes, the reading ends immediately at that point.

So, setting the center King pile aside, how many other positions ended up with all four cards turned face-up?

Count that number — the more positions that completed, the better your fortune for the day.

Even without knowing what each card means, you can enjoy this method easily, and the anticipation while waiting for the result gives it real thrill. You get the satisfaction of having "tried your luck," and whatever the outcome, it's easy to take in stride — which is a big part of its charm.

It's fun to play alone, but just as enjoyable with friends, so give it a try sometime.

What Playing Cards Reveal About Romance

Now let's introduce a method called "Monte Carlo," perfect for when you want to enjoy a reading about the future of your love life.

It's a method for finding out how things might unfold with someone you're interested in.

First, think of that person while you shuffle all 52 cards well, excluding the Jokers.

Then lay out 25 cards face-up on the table in a 5-by-5 grid.

Look for any cards of the same number sitting next to each other — vertically, horizontally, or diagonally counts as adjacent — and remove those pairs.

Once you've created gaps this way, shift the remaining cards to the left to fill them in, then draw new cards from your remaining pile to refill the grid back to 25 cards.

Repeat this whole process until you run out of cards to draw.

So, of the 25 cards you originally laid out, how many are left?

  • If none remain, the two of you are a perfect match — a wonderful, mutual relationship.
  • If cards remain, read the result using the phrase "a-to-ki-su-ne" (あ• と• き• す• ね).

For example, if 3 cards remain, count "a → to → ki" and land on "ki." If 7 cards remain, count "a → to → ki → su → ne → a → to," cycling through the phrase as needed, and land on "to."

  • A (あ) — choosing your partner carefully will lead to a good relationship
  • To (と) — starting as friends and gradually deepening the bond
  • Ki (き) — a good romance is sure to come
  • Su (す) — a relationship full of mutual affection
  • Ne (ね) — a passionate romance

These interpretations give you a clear sense of where things stand between the two of you — a great method to try whenever you find yourself lost in thought about a relationship.

Try Lenormand Reading with Playing Cards

Playing-card fortune telling is a fun way to glimpse the future, but it can also be used for a more advanced style of card reading: Lenormand.

Because Lenormand cards were originally designed for games, each one corresponds to a specific playing card — the Ace, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, or K of a given suit — which means you can do a full Lenormand reading using an ordinary deck.

Here is the full correspondence list (the number on the left is the Lenormand card number):

1 · Rider 9 of Hearts
2 · Clover 6 of Diamonds
3 · Ship 10 of Spades
4 · House King of Hearts
5 · Tree 7 of Hearts
6 · Clouds King of Clubs
7 · Snake Queen of Clubs
8 · Coffin 9 of Diamonds
9 · Bouquet Queen of Spades
10 · Scythe Jack of Diamonds
11 · Whip Jack of Clubs
12 · Birds 7 of Diamonds
13 · Child Jack of Spades
14 · Fox 9 of Clubs
15 · Bear 10 of Clubs
16 · Star 6 of Hearts
17 · Stork Queen of Hearts
18 · Dog 10 of Hearts
19 · Tower 6 of Spades
20 · Garden 8 of Spades
21 · Mountain 8 of Clubs
22 · Crossroads Queen of Diamonds
23 · Mice 7 of Clubs
24 · Heart Jack of Hearts
25 · Ring Ace of Clubs
26 · Book 10 of Diamonds
27 · Letter 7 of Spades
28 · Gentleman Ace of Hearts
29 · Lady Ace of Spades
30 · Lily King of Spades
31 · Sun Ace of Diamonds
32 · Moon 8 of Hearts
33 · Key 8 of Diamonds
34 · Fish King of Diamonds
35 · Anchor 9 of Spades
36 · Cross 6 of Clubs

With this correspondence list, you can substitute an ordinary deck of playing cards for a real Lenormand deck and still do a proper Lenormand reading.

Alternatively, when doing the oracle-style readings introduced earlier, you can match whichever card you draw to its Lenormand counterpart, and use that keyword to expand your interpretation.
