Luna's Bear Tarot follows the complete Rider Edition and casts every card with teddy bears. The Tower still falls and Death still arrives; they simply do not frighten you out of the room. The card stock is matte and scratch-resistant, so a deck you handle daily still looks new a year in.

The illustrations were built around a single physical idea: a mellow, huggable shape. That constraint runs through all 78 cards, so Strength, the Knights and the Cups all belong to the same world. The symbols the Rider Edition depends on are kept intact underneath the softness.

Tarot's images were designed centuries ago to be read, and some of them were designed to alarm. That is fair enough on the page, and much less fair on a bedside table. Teddy bears turned out to solve it without costing anything: a bear can carry a sword, fall from a tower, or stand for Death, and the meaning survives the translation intact. What leaves is only the dread.
